Have you noticed how your mood is lifted the minute you walk into a bakery? The aroma of cakes, pies and other baked goods combine to fill the air with the smell of sweetness. It’s no wonder bakeries have become a choice meeting place for many. But do you know the origins of bakeries?

bertuccos_3aThe art of baking was developed early during the Roman Empire. Roman citizens loved baked goods and served them frequently for important occasions such as feasts and weddings etc.Baking quickly became a respectable occupation for Romans. In fact, the first bakers’ guild was established in 168 BC in Rome.

As demand increased, bakers started baking breads and goods at home and selling them out on the streets. This trend became common and soon, baked products were getting sold in streets of Rome, Germany, Londobertuccos_6n and other parts of Europe. The first home deliveries of baked goods also started at this time.

The rise in demand inspired the bakers to establish a common place where all could go to buy the goods. With that, the first open-air bakery of baked goods was born bertuccos_5in Paris. Since then, bakeries have become a place to purchase delicious goods and get together around the world. By the colonial times they were commonly viewed as places to gather and socialize
